When to repair a unit and when to retire it

Clients often ask whether an older unit is worth repairing. The honest answer is that most are, as long as the hair itself is still healthy. Here is how we assess a unit at drop-off and what each outcome usually involves.
Signs a unit can be restored
- The lace has small tears at the hairline or around the ear tabs
- Knots have loosened in a few areas but the overall density is still good
- The hair feels dry or tangles easily but still has elasticity when wet
- The color has faded or shifted and you would like it refreshed
Signs a unit is near the end of its life
- Hair snaps rather than stretches when gently pulled
- Shedding continues after re-knotting more than once
- The cap has stretched so that no adjustment keeps it secure
What happens at drop-off
We look at the unit together, explain what we see and agree the work before anything begins. Turnaround is confirmed at the same time, and you can read more on our repair and restoration page. If a unit is ready to retire, we can often reuse your measurements for a new custom unit.
